The Things That Really Matter

I came across this article by Pete Langr, Budgeteer News and it reminded me of the things that really matter to me: http://www.duluthbudgeteer.com/articles/index.cfm?id=23208

I sent the author an email with a little story about my upbringing:

Mom & Dad bought their first house and immediately began to have a water shortage with the well. Bath's growing up were a big pot of water heated on the stove and a cold one to follow. This was Erie PA and always cold - I never had more than 2" of water in the tub (you can imagine I took as few baths as possible) I took my first shower around 16 at a friends house.

My father had 6 different wells drilled but to no avail. The majority of my life my father worked 3rd shift at a Plastic shop and my mother was a house wife. They never incurred debt and God only knows how they afforded it, but they did.

My mother died in 1999 and in 2000 the township said they were going to put in waterlines. Of course there was cost involved but my father was determined to have water in his house.

One of the last conversations I had with him before he passed in 2002 was in regard to water. He could barely get the words out and chocked back tears while he said "I just wish your mother were here to see this" and he collapsed into my arms.

My furnace also continues to start.

Black Friday Online Shopping Tips

It's Black Friday and you are standing in line at 3am, freezing your butt off, waiting patiently for the store manager to unlock the door and LET YOU IN!!!! This particular stop is an exclusive pre-Black Friday door buster and you have only 15 minutes to fight the crowd for your item and check out, before you have to be in the car driving to the next destination in the dark and cold with your thermos of coffee riding shotgun. There are no passengers because you dont have time to worry about their wants and needs. This is a solo show baby, just get out of the way.

And then there is me: I am up at 3am too, but I am in my jammies, in my bed, under the covers with the browser open on my laptop to the stores and the items I want to purchase. The time I have spent planning has paid off and I am able to complete my shopping with minimal clicks of the mouse.

I am trying to think of any drawbacks to shopping online........ Well, sometimes the servers cant handle all the hits and the site goes painfully slow or doesnt move at all. Sometimes the item you are looking for sells out. But even on Black Friday shopping on line, in my opinion, is the way to go - you just have to have to do a bit of planning.

Here are a few tips and things to keep in mind:

1. Set yourself up to be automatically emailed when a new Black Friday ad is released. It takes less time and energy to have the ads come to you then continually searching. Tip - Maybe even set up a second email box just for shopping so that you dont have to pick through? Gmail is free and so are a bunch of others. Here is the link to DealTaker's Black Friday site - There are others but we are right on top of this stuff and you wont need them ;-)

2. There are some stores that will have a limited # of items they are willing to sell at extremely low prices (Just like in a retail store). To make sure that you dont miss a great sale on a special item, prioritize the items based on how good the sale is, what time it starts and how sure you are you will buy the item regardless of the price. Tip - Use bookmarks to organize the items instead of creating a new list you have to keep up with. Plus with bookmarks you can move the item up or down in priority if a new sale alert comes outs with a better deal.

3. Check for Coupons!!!! Always check for coupons when you shop online. Tip - Sometimes coupons are excluded on heavily discounted items so prioritize your items based on the stores sale price unless you know for sure a coupon can be used. Tip - Check for Coupons as close to the time of the sale as possible. Coupons are always changing and the stores may release a coupon to co-inside with their sale.

4. Check to see if the item is already discounted. Why wait? Purchase it now and open up the space to put another item on your list. Tip Dealtaker will put a message on the item to let you know if it is available now!

5. When the time of the sale arrives -Tip Speaking of time be careful to check the timezone - it may be 3am, but on the west coast - If the price doesn't automatically change refresh (F5) your browser. I know that for the folks that shop on line all the time this isn't a big tip, but if you are new to shopping on line the F5 key will become your new best friend :-)

5. Putting items in the shopping cart prior to the sale time has not worked well for me. Some stores will hold the items in your shopping cart, but trying to get the new or discounted price on that item can really cause confusion. I have better luck with the item up in front of me and my finger on the mouse ready to click 'add to order'.

6. Tip - Set up your account in advance so that you can just fly through the checkout. If you are comfortable storing your CC # (or if the store keeps this info) you can basically enter your user ID or email address, password and place the order in a couple clicks. Even if you don't store your credit card info at the store, having the account set up will save tons of time.

OK then - On to the next store and Happy Shopping!

Finding the lowest prices on Travel

Travel discounts are large and many right now!

In the past most travel deals were so specific, (i.e. only good for a Monday thru Wednesday stay in October when you purchase air, hotel and car at the same time), that it was not worth the time to search! But now most 3 star hotels have heavily discounted rooms, perks such as 50 gas cards or free dinners, and if you book through a third party such as travelocity, cheaptickets, hotels.com, etc., you can usually find a coupon for a flat $ amount off of the stay on top of all of the other discounts.

At www.Dealtaker.com we are constantly finding new deals and coupons to save you money on travel - Here is a sampling - Check it out!

    Flash Drive Deals

Dealtaker.com has a 4GB Flash Drive from Super Media Store for $13.99 Shipped. I can remember a year ago measuring the price of a flash drive in tens by the size. So a 4GB was normally around $40. A 1GB was around $10 and a 2GB around $20. Anything less than that could be a good deal.

I have watched the price of flash drives go down over the the past year - (It is nice to see something going down in price instead of up!) Now I wont even post a 1GB that is over $6 Shipped. It is just not a good deal. $10 for a 2GB and usually $18 or $20 for a 4GB.

Long story short - I think this is a great deal! But it is only good for today so "Don't Wait, You might be too late!"

A-DATA PD22 4GB USB Flash Drive - Retail Package (Free Ground Shipping) Original Price: $37.99, Sale Price: $13.99 @ SuperMedia Store

Deal of the Day Sales - Monday June 9th - Dont Wait, You may be too Late!

OK this title made me chuckle - Only because my mother use to say to me Siddeley (name has been changed to protect the innocent).....

Siddeley, Sh*t or get off the POT! We've gotta go!!!! (Yes, she swore very little, but I heard this saying quite a bit)

This was usually on a Saturday morning when I was pretending I had something important to do/get/repair instead of leaving with my mom to get groceries. I didn't mind going to the grocery store but I did mind leaving in the middle of Land of the Lost or Josie and the Pussy Cats.

So Mom, for all those times you waited on me........ I will be right there! Really.......Just a second!!!!!

Fhee's First Flight - Funny Story

What Is So Great About Flying?

A friend of mine and one of the Dealtaker moderators, Fheenix33, wrote up an account of her first flight. It is pretty funny and I think anyone who took their first flight as an adult can relate to so many of the thoughts, feelings and fears she has expressed.

Here are a couple excerpts, but be sure to read it through if you have time - Cracked me up :-)

    • This plane was so small that I almost turned and walked off.
    • I couldn't "pull to the side of the road" and get some fresh air or stretch.
    • The big deal that they make about the "snacks and drinks" is amusing too. (*Note from Siddeley - this will be one of those things Fhee tells her Grandchildren "On my first flight they served snacks and drinks.....but things were different then.......")
    • In the Atlanta Airport - I think I walked about 5 miles before I even had a clue as to where I was supposed to be.
    • ...my whole train of thought was "how the hell I was going to get back to Ohio without having to get on a plane again?"
    • Luckily we made it out, but we were the last flight to leave. (Been there, done that for sure)
    • Our bodies were not meant to make it from Atlanta to Ohio in an hour
    • ...two days after I got back, I got very sick. Gotta love that recycled airplane air.

I wanted to find a picture to go along with this story. So I googled 'fear of flying woman' and this is one of the pics that was brought up. It's a woman alright, other than that I am not sure how it relates....but hey, what do I know?

    Polarized Sunglasses

Ok first the important stuff - Deal of Day - Pepper's Windchill Polarized Sunglasses - '07 Closeout - Reg $34.95, Now $14.93 @ REI

Now - Why Polarized? Who Cares? What's the big deal? My DH would rave about his polarized glasses - he'd make me look through them an turn them this way and that, but it was his prescription lenses so I never got the "full effect". Had to buy a new pair of sunglasses and just to shut him up (I know it sounds rude - but it's honest) I tried on a pair of polarized - Which were on sale but more expensive! This deal loving chic didnt see any reason to pay more - Not in the store anyway......I bought the glasses and when I got outside it was literally amazing - The sky was bluer, trees greener, everything POPPED!

Here is an explanation from PolarizedLenses.com:

Polarization is like a chemical venetian blind which rearranges light and lets you see "through" glare. 100% Polarized lenses are the only truly effective way of elininating glare. Water, fog, rain, snow or early morning dew, have reflective properties, which enhance reflected glare. In addition to water, glare is also a problem on roads and highways.

I actually put my polarized sunglasses on now when it starts raining - I can see everything better.

I had to swallow my pride and tell DH that he was right. He was very gracious and excited that I liked them and then he said "So will you listen to me next time?" I still dont think I have answered ;-)

One of the Challenges of doing a Deal-of-Day thread

One of the challenges of doing a DOD thread is making sure that the store has changed the deal. This sounds like something that should just be a given, but there are varying degrees to which this happens.

Some of the sites are great and when I login around 7am the new item is there just waiting for me (ok this is my world we're talking about)...... I title this bookmark group as 'DOD'.

Some other sites are a bit later but it is a 'scheduled later' so they are part of my "plan" and I check on them last. They are called 'DOD - Later in Day'

Other sites are more of a Deal-of-Week (DOW). I can hang with this too - Check on them all every couple days (OK I am anal and if you have to know the truth I check every ding dong day) anyway...... I only post the deal the first time it is shown or the first time I see it. But, once again, I am expecting that the item wont change daily so it's OK. I call these my 'DOW ' group (down right original eh?)

I have a 'DOD New' that I put all of the new stores in until I can decide what group they fit in.

Which brings me to the final group (for the moment) - the 'DOD infrequent changes' group. (Gives me chills just thinking about it). See, I want to have all of the Deals posted as early as possible so that the folks who shop from the DOD thread can get the items before the store runs out of stock. If the deal hasn't changed I check back "often" (I already said I was anal, so dont ask how often). I DO eventually give up (no honestly I do), but before I log off for the day I have to look again and doggone it if the deal hasn't been updated! Who knows when....sitting there waiting for me.... "Where have you been Siddeley? I have been waiting here for hours"

If we were to change to an automatic DOD feed this would all be taken care of, of course. But, in the meantime you can know that there is some good old fashion Heart going into these Deals :-)

and some obsessiveness, but do we have to bring that up again?

New Stores added to DOD thread @ Dealtaker

Every chance I get I search for stores that have a Deal-of-Day or Deal-of-Week and add them to the DOD thread. I found a couple last night that look promising -

Week 1- Robert Muraine The Great- So You Think You Can Dance

This Guy is INCREDIBLE!! Give him 6 months and he will be in everything we see...

Not sure who the judges are (I havent watched the show before) but at the end of the video the male judge does a great job at matching him with talent.

I especially liked the part where he pretends to pull on his chin/throat and it is in synch - VERY hard to explain so go check it out ok?

    Cost-Effective, Online Local Marketing Strategies

I really appreciate the candidness in this short article. When I first started to read it I was expecting cost effective ways to advertise online. But what the blogger is really saying means even more to me:

"The older methods of marketing have gone the way of black and white television and AM radio – such methods are pretty much obsolete in today’s fast-paced world.

Your customers are working and living in the fast-paced environment so you need to appeal to them. Your customers don’t have time to flip through the newspaper and find your ad somewhere in the back."

The final line of my comment was:
In fact - I see the companies who are marketing through the mail as behind the times and am less likely to be interested in what they are offering.

But you can check out the article for yourself since there are no envelopes to open, nothing to shred or toss and it is just one click away
